About Me

Janice Portrait original.png

I'm a freelance writer and (family) travel writer living in Scotland.

My background is in television. I spent three years working as a researcher at STV and then moved to the BBC where I spent twelve years writing, directing and producing arts and history documentaries for BBC4 and BBC Scotland, working with Dan Cruickshank, Fay Weldon, Claudia Winkleman, Alexander McCall Smith, Nicola Benedetti and Phil Cunningham.

I spent a lot of time telling the stories of real people for the BBC's history output meeting a range of individuals from WW2 Chindit POWs to Shetland herring girls. Finding these real stories and expressing them passionately and accurately was the most privileged challenge.

Most memorable moments? Flying in a Nimrod over the Scottish countryside and visiting the graves of soldiers at Kanchanaburi, Thailand near the bridge on the river Kwai.

I've also spent some time in PR writing features for DMOs such as VisitAberdeen and Visit Cairngorms.

When my two little boys arrived life changed but I still wanted to travel and write. The children now feature on my family travel blog Scots2Travel.com, and they give me a new perspective on destinations, attractions, hotels and transport.

I now work from home writing my heart out.  I like establishing strong relations with an editor and a publication, and delivering what they want, when they want it.  I truly value my contributors and all the work invested in my articles from PRs and marketing teams.
